I would like to move the discussion board from this software to another, take a look: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/. AFAIK, there is a converter to move all the current data (users, threads) to the new software, so we wouldn't lose anything there ... I've noticed a couple quirks and problems on this software, plus the followup-version of this one has even more problems ... any comments? Before I actually move it, I'll do a test-conversion and see if everything seems to check out ...

OK, tried the stuff out, board seems to convert fine as far as I can tell for now ... a quick note about differences:

- new soft has full text indexing, searching should finally work reliably now ... (was always wondering what this board was finding when I searched for something)
- no more Instant Messenger ... don't know to what extent it is being used, it's a nice feature, but I've noticed quite a few people have disabled it ... Instead, you can use regular private messages inside the new board ...
- uploading an avatar/image that is displayed with any post works nicely with the new board.
- I can finally define the member status a bit easier (you know, the "no life" stuff etc.)

If you want to play (I will re-import the database if there are no objections in a couple days, so do not post anything there you don't want lost ...), go to /phpBB2 and have a look ... still need to do some work on the templates and stuff, but the board itself should work ...

There's a fbody hideout board w/ the same layout. Only thing I've noticed is it's sometimes slow to load up. Have you experienced this?

I like those new PHP boards. And I don't think the IM feature is soooo important. You can as well have your ICQ/AIM/MSN running as a replacement for the IM...

I find this board gives me terrible problems actually posting and then you find it's accepted your reply ten times and you have to delete them again. I also have difficulty getting it to come up when the server is busy but that may be a server problem. This is the worst board I frequent for giving me errors all the time. having said that, I'm not bothered either way.

IM is great. It is quick and you don't have to waste space. :)

That's one of the problems I'm trying to solve with the new software ... don't know if it'll work out, but ...

Hm ... is that from work (government) link, or commercial ISP? If the latter, which one are you on?

I'm in contact with some guys who hack mods for that software ... might get an IM replacement quickly ...

Government link. You never have to worry about how to spell Error - it's on the screen half the time. Very frustrating.

Personally I do not like the IM. ICQ or other chats are quicker and more fun.
I do not know if IM is allowed on Gov computers.
I know for sure ICQ and Chats are not.
But on the other hand, I can not even log on and post anything on my computer, ours are even closer watched.
(Defense Logistics Agency) so I only type here when
I am home.
Which may be the reason why some people have IM disabled, Garry, they may use a Gov computer sometimes/all times?

I'll probably end up hacking the code myself ... need to see what I have to do for authentication purposes and stuff ...

Hm ... ask and you shall be given ... barely two days after posting the request on the phpBB-support forum, someone hacked up an IM for the new board ... going to put it in later, still beta and a couple minor things to be done, but it's looking good and working!
Any other comments concerning the new software?

The search thing definitely needs improvement. I typed in Bitburg pics this morning, and got about 20 pages worth of crap to look through. :O

Did you try the search on the new board? It has the data up to two days ago, should get some better results there ... searched for bitburg and pic*, only got 35 matches ...
Please note, searching for "pic" will NOT find "picture" or "pics" ... the new software uses full text indexing, so it will find the posts faster and more exact ... but requires you to search correctly ... ;)

Cool. I like the blue surround but the neon blue headings are hard to read and the grey script isn't particularly legible.
