I had to change a blown instrument cluster light for which you have to (1) remove the surround and squeeze it out past the steering column and levers making sure you don't scratch the instruments with the sharp locating clips (2) Unbolt the instruments which won't come out past the steering column before you (3) unclip the perspex cover leaving your instruments at risk of being damaged (4) pull out the instruments from the connector and remove to (5) get at the bulbs which are locked in tight before you replace in reverse order, trying not to scratch or break anything. Note that the perspex cover will jam against the now dropped speedo needle so you need to turn the ignition on to get that needle up. What a palaver!

Wow, I've never had to replace a bulb, but it certainly is a royal PITA to get it out. I just took off the one clip that always gets caught. It's so much easier to take it out now. ;)

You got off easy... if you had a '95 you would have to take the entire dash apart. There is alot more layers of plastic to get to where you take the cluster out.
