No, I did not have to drop the gas tank (why?), it fits in spare tire space without major modifications. I just removed a bit metal on the antenna motor mount, but thats it.
I tried to do some kind of technical, schematic diagramm - I know there a surely ways to do it easier, but it works and it is completely removable (no welding required, except when building the box  ).
