Nope. Got it home and that's about it. Tell Dan thanks a Million! I'll call him later in the week to thank him again though.
I was too tired and didn't pop the valve covers off so today I'll be doing that and see what happened. Hopefully it's just a couple of rockers that popped off. IF not I'll be tearing it down at least the heads and go from there.

Took the valve covers off and no damage there. So that leads me to something internal. NOT good. My guess is the oil pump gear went bye or the bottom end went bye bye from some type of failure. She'll fire but it's too horrible to listen to so I shut it down immediately. If I see kibbles and bits come from the oil pan when I go to drain it tonight......that's a wrap for me. I'm not gonna even dump more $$ to get it back up again.
Wonder if their is a company here that'll ship a car even though it's not running? Anyone know? IF so then I'll ship it back and let her sit at my Pops for untold yrs till I can get her a new hear w/ some hair dryers to boot. If no can ship it like that then it's part city only the frame will be standing when I'm done stripping it.

Dude don't say it is so! When did this happen? At the track or the way home? What kind of noise it is making(double tapping or knocking)? Sorry to hear it, damn that sucks. I just hope that nothing happens to mine. Looks like all the high moded cars are breaking.

Shame to hear all the bad news. And after all that grief we gave R4C about the frailty of modded rice. It makes you wonder about the longevity of the LS1 when modified. Perhaps a Z06 is the only reliable way to that much power?? Perhaps it's really worth that much money!

Bruce, my best was a 13.452@108.XX. I was spinning all the way through 2nd, though, so with some better traction, I will be in the 12's for sure.
John ran a 12.6, so with some traction, and maybe some gears, he'll be in the 11's for sure.

Sorry to hear what happened .
A few years ago my friend ship his '65 Mustang with about 400hp back to Ft Lewis through the military at Mannheim. Since he didn't want anyone "playing" with his toy, he took the rotor off. They shipped it, car made it fine, re-installed rotor and drove it home. This was an "extra" car so he paid about $1,200 to have it shipped.
Worse case scenario, how much for the whole car?

sorry to hear about the luck John. I really hope you find it is something cheap/easy.
Think maybe you dropped a valve? Timing chain went freaky and tried to come past the cover????
I'm sure you watched the oil pressure gauge when you cranked it, if the shaft or pump was trash you shouldnt have had normal pressure??????
We all know if we want to play, we have to pay, but you have paid enough the past couple years.
G'luck

That sucks if its running it should not be a timing chain unless it jumped a tooth. Kinda sounds like bearings mains and or rod.
Jack you have power enough for mid 12's with that trap speed.

John so are you gonna have a teardown party. I would pull your engine and check it out. Hopefully I will have a buildup party this weekend in the craft shop.

SSZ28 I've got 35K in this car not including the 12 I spent to buy it in 97. Every receipt for every part on the car is in a page protected book. The true value of the car is 3500 bucks since it's a 93 w/ 69K miles on it. My value if I was to sell it as is would be 15K and that's probably asking for too much to be honest. 12K would be the lowest.
Hotrod I still hope it's something cheap too. Didn't get to take the other valve cover off still but I will today and report. My hydra revkit could've gone haywire as well w/ the springs collasping. If I don't see nothing there I'll pull the intank off and look a little further.
Hawk if it's the main bearings I'd be pissed. Can't be a rod because it's not a knocking type sound more like a clatter but very fast like twice the speed of idle.
So you can ship a car w/ out the engine being operational? Did I read that correctly?
I'll have more news tonight!
Thanks,
|

I'm just guessing but I don't think that it is in the bottom half. Where does it sound like it is coming from? You could have broken a roller tip off of one of your rockers or a roller off of the lifter. Keep us in formed. If you need some help with pull it let me know and I could spare a weekend to help.

Like I said about the shipping, it was a few years ago. Contact transportation to see if that's changed.
If you are willing to let the car run, you can hold a tube, screwdriver, stethascope (?), etc., to your ear and place it on the covers, head, block, wherever you can reach to see where the noise is loudest. Just hope that you don't make the problem worse.
Good luck

It happened about 15-20 minutes after we left Bitburg. The car just started making a noise.. I really feel bad for you John. You have such a great car.. I wish, for you, that it would run....

I just cant help but thinking......... (I know I wasnt there, so I dont know)
Seems to me something was wrong with your motor before you ran your runs. Seems to me that it was alittle soft, I read that you ran a 12.5-12.6, and I dont know what the mph was (yeah I know wheel spin, auto x setup, but.....) with a brick s$it house 396, running thru a hydra-revved top end I would have guessed alittle more. What is your shift spot at, 7K????
Seems to me that you would have been faster with a healthy motor. (maybe just me). I would bet alot (but not pay ) that its top end. You say the clatter is twice the speed of idle? Makes sense, cuz the cam turns twice to the cranks one. I would look at the hydra rev as the culprit, or maybe your lifters are the blame???
I just refuse to believe an ARE shortblock would give up the ghost after so little time.
Wishing you the best
Rob
