yeah I know I know but the army looks easier to get into lol

I didnt graduate high school, and got a GED

Also, they are doing my police check, will a misdemeanor breach of peace prevent me from getting in?

Since everyone is kinda talking about their little stories I will throw my two cents worth out there...I havent really said much in a while.

While I am a musician (yes, a band geek on top of being a car nut), I am military, but whatever you may decide to do I would strongly suggest talking to all the branches to see which one can give you the better deal.

I joined the army...mostly because with my skills and education I was allowed to come in as an E4. Air Force wanted me to come in as an E2, and then really didnt seem to give a rat about my education (Masters Degree + a year toward a PHD). The Marines and Navy would also let me come in as an E2...the Marines were the most receptive to my skills and really wanted me, just couldnt give me the deal I wanted.

The Army also paid off my student loans on top of my salary. (around $30,000) I have now been in for four and a half years and am soon going to pin on E6. Ask anyone in ANY of the branches how long it took them to get E6. This has been my experience with the army...and I know that its probably NOT typical, but when you talk about coming in as an E2 or E4 or at whatever rank it makes a HUGE difference...particularly when it comes to "play" money. Over the time it takes to go from E2 to E4 you have lost probably several thousand dollars.

I am also exploring the possibility of becoming an officer....which is a LOT more money...my paycheck would virtually double if I pinned on 2LT.

Other things to keep in mind....if you are thinking about college and have the opportunity to go to college DO IT!!!! Then join the army and let them pay off your loans, and become an officer...I think that it allows you to focus on college rather than having to split your focus like a lot of my companions taking courses now have to do. Then you can focus on the military once you are in...decide if you like it or not while your college gets paid off and then see if you want to be an officer or not. Most of the better officers I have encountered were enlisted at one point...they have a unique perspective on things being on both sides of the fence.

If you dont want to go to college at all, then go ahead and research your job (whether its a mechanic, a bandsman, or infantry-I am sure that many of us on the board know people in that specialty). Then make an EDUCATED decision regarding which branch you want to go into.

It has its moments where it sucks a lot...basic training sucked...and there are a lot of people I know (even in the band) who are in the middle of the Iraqi desert right now thinking "THIS SUCKS!!!" But, at the same time, I personally have my dream job. I could hardly imagine anything being easier or more fun, or more challenging than being where I am right now.

Just some food for thought...feel free to email me offline if you want or need any more suggestions or thoughts....Dixongray@aol.com

63B??? WOO HOO!!! Hope that you can come to Giebelstadt. How about an aviation unit? Maybe, B Co 7/159 AVN? Small post, OK, tiny post with a huge post just 20 minutes north- Wuerzburg. In case you haven't noticed, I desperatley need some mechanics here. Definately those that know which end of a screwdriver to use! Actually my current mechs are pretty good. Just what did your recruiter tell you? Let us know the details before you sign up. Are you getting a bonus? Ask to see if one is available, you could get a couple grand for signing up. Keep us posted.

Jack, 63B is a Light Wheel Vehicle Mech... but I hear 63S is the way to go. They work on the Big Boy Trucks.

Hey??? We 63Bs work on the BIG BOY TOYS too. In my last unit I had a HEMMT wrecker and I towed just about everything. I even towed civilian fuel trucks, one of those big Mercedes buses, some Mercedes 7.5 ton trucks along with military equipment. In my first unit, I was pulling packs (engine and transmission) out of M113s (track vehicle) with my 5-ton wrecker. In Heidelberg I got to pull the rotor head off of a Blackhawk helicopter with my HEMMT.
It just depends on the unit you're attached to.
If you can maintain a good grade point average in AIT, (top 10%) you should be eligible to go to H8 school for 2 weeks after AIT. It's so you can get an additional skill identifier of being "Recovery Certified". You get to play in the mud and then you are qualified to be on a wrecker. It's a lot of fun.
BTW, a HEMMT wrecker is an 8X8 beast with only 445 hp but 1,450 lb/ft torque. It will tow a fully loaded 5-ton truck down the Autobahn at 60mph, uphill, with ease. It can tow 70 tons in low range on level ground as well. How's this for an engine, Detroit Deisel two-stroke V-8, 8-71 blower and a turbo.

and Hawk, I would race, but you would take me down no problem, Id rather save the embarrasment.

The 383 of my dreams is on hold, cant afford it, now im in a race against time to buy a used shortblock, toss my ported heads on, some 1.6 LT4 rockers, and stock cam and "He said POOP", if I ran 13.03 stock I should go at least 12.60-12.7 with ported heads and some 1.6 rockers

Graf Vilseck are the best bases in germany. I live in a duplex town house but if you are not married you may live in the barracks lately remodeled to the army's 1+1 standard meaning two soldier share a bathroom but really nice. When I was a private I had 4-6 room mates for the first year.

Grafenwoehr is a great place to get stationed. Kaiserslautern is close to the tracks and the autobahns are nice and hilly with plenty of curves. Fun when racing M3s and M5s. However, you would be amazed at the amount of F-bodies here on Gieb (which is centrally located to just about every Army installation). Unfortunately, only a few of us are part of this "club", for now. There are some stangs running around here but most of them know enough to stay away from us.
:!: Whatever you decide, make sure that it's what you want to do. Don't sign up only because you want to see Germany. There are cheaper and easier ways to travel. However, if military life is for you, go for it. Just don't rush into something that you will regret later. Just think it out. As with any job there are pros and cons. For me, the pros outweigh the cons by quite a bit and I knew that I would join the military early in high school. Good luck and hope to see you in about 6 months!

The US Army rocks and we are respected world wide. Been to 40 countries so far not saying everybody likes us but they dont mess with us face to face they resort to terrorist activity to take cheap shots at us every once and a while

J/K go to bavaria. We have the real stuff here: Blondes, 250+ varieties of beer AND Oktoberfest + nice weather (Southernmost part of Germany!)

Forget the north.... they drink piss (Wink Squirr)
