If anybody should get word of a good price, decent motor that will fit my '79, let me know ... Thinking even a nice LT1 would do I recon ... 250+HP would be a nice start, though ...

Garry, you should look at the LS1. It is really becoming the motor of choice for custom hot rods! It is fast from the box, and responds well to mods! You can usually find a good deal with tranny.. I don't know how much you're looking to spend, but for about $3-4K you can get the combo... Good luck!

I recon an LS1 will be harder to find over here, plus I'd also need all the wiring and everything ... remember, they didn't have the '79 Camaro pre-built for an LS1 engine yet And while the LS1 has more power to start off with, I recon it's easier to tune the LT1 when putting stuff on it, as it doesn't rely on computer control (IIRC, please correct me if I'm wrong)
Basic idea I had was: pull the 350 from it (possibly sell it if I can find anybody interested in it ), drop in something with a bit more power, put the MSD stuff on it (again, correct me, but the MSD distributor, anlog box, etc. will fit the LT1?), see how it does, then maybe a year later drop a little blower or something on it ...
Open for suggestions, though ...

That sounds good Garry. You're probably right about all the stupid wiring and crap. Either way it would be a really sweet car.

You would be better off rebuilding your old motor . Stroke it and set some good aluminum heads like AFR on top. You could easily make 400 horses with a 383 and about 10 to 1 compression. You would make better horse power than a LT1 and if you were going to put a supercharger on top you would be able to fit it to those heads rather than a LT1. Not to mention after market parts for this are a hell of a lot cheaper.
A stroker kit is about 1200 dollars and AFR heads are about 1200 dollars. So if you were going to buy a LT1 one it would cost you more than that.

Hm ... the motor is an 89 crate motor ... according to Red's list it has about 170hp stock (the numbers I ran confirms something in that range, even with the Edelbrock carb) - don't know if that is a good starting point for rebuilding the motor ...

350 ... yup, it was in there ... original motor according to the VIN was a 305, though ...

Run the #s on your block to make sure. And the 350 is a good block to build up. To bad ....when I was in germany I had 3 small chevys in my shop. I even had a 400 small block.Im telling you man build up the motor you have now you wont regret it. Just make sure it is a 350 first.

Give me the casting #s on the heads and the #s on the block. There should be some on a "pad" on the block right behind the alternator. (pass. side right where the head bolts on. Look straight down and you should see them if the alt. isn't in the way) I have some books that can decode casting #s an small blocks. Even if it did only come with 170 hp, all you need to do is to change the heads and cam to make some serious power. If the block has low mileage and the cylinders are fine, this is all you would need to start with. Parts are cheap, it's the machining that costs $$$.
BTW, I don't think that the distributor will work on a LT1 without some mods to the engine. Would be easier to keep it fuel injected. The water pump is different too and would take some custom hoses to properly hook it up to your existing radiator.

NNNNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Don't even think about it, ouch my head is hurting now. If you did that in the states you would not be very well liked among the Chevy fans maybe the Ford fans as well. Do you know what engine is in your car(305 or 350)?
