The beret isnt so bad (yet) I guess. Its not like we are wearing fireman hats. But, I just got my BDU hat formed the way I like it:(.

I do believe that if we had to get them, the regular army should have picked the tan beret, or go with your branch colors. Unless your branch colors were plaid or something like that.

Hmm, sweet idea, Rob, but with all the trouble they went through to just get the black ones, that would be a freakin' nightmare!! I think we should just go coverless, personally!! :D

I think the whole damn steal the Black Beret from the Rangers thing should be scrapped. With all the money the Army wasted on this they could have paid for numerous needed restorations on European posts as well as stateside posts. We should put them all in a big box and mail them to Gen. Shinseki. Let him wear the damn beret. Better yet if you want a black beret go EARN IT!

I kinda thought like you Tres, and still do alittle. But if you get right down to it, the Ranger's dont earn the Black beret, they earn the tab. There is only one school/profession that you earn a beret in, and its Green.

I researched thru the whole deal, about how armor units have been authorized the black beret way before the rangers adopted it.(like decades before)

It has became to symbolize speciality (berets in general). My biggest problem with it however, is it is just change. I'm all for improvement, but to change berets signifing a change in force (force XXI, Army of One) and all that jazz, looks like General Shinseki just wants to be remember for something.

Actually for a change you are wrong Rob!!! :-dunno:

The black beret and the Ranger tab stand for two completely different things.

The beret is earned by first making it through a program (RIP or ROP) to be able to even be in the Ranger Regiment, then it is earned daily as a member of the unit. This is where you will find REAL Rangers.

The tab is simply what you earn by attending a school for 2 months. Most people that have Ranger tabs have never and would never serve 1 day in the Regiment.

Simply put, one is a school and the other is a way of life.

I cant believe it, :-pat: and in front of everyone!!!

Seriously, I am wrong for believing something I read/heard, dont remember which (makes it worse huh:) ) and they made this incredible point out of the fact that Rangers just hijacked the black beret and it just kinda stuck.

.......Of course you realize, that I will be watching your posts very carefully from now on! Image

What it all boils down to, is that he is the Chief of Staff, and we are mere peons, so just do what he says, and don't question it!!!! :D :-fruit:

Just because we don't like it doesn't mean I won't do it. I am an NCO I do what is necessary for the good of the Army and my unit. And yes the Black beret intially belonged to the Armor branch circa WWI I think.

Tres

Hm ... I hated the things, too ... only had to wear it for basic training and special occasions after that though ... anyway, kept one when I got out ... (somehow, they gave me two but only put one on the list ...) After all I was lucky - I was too tall for the old style uniform when I had to go in, so I got the new style uniforms ... they had a cap/hat similar to the US uniform ... the guys that still got the old uniform had the so called "Schiffchen" ("Little boats", no tellin' what the right name is in english) which looked ridiculous ... btw, I had a green beret ... :)
