Most of the Germans love my car. At a car show near Berlin, I was offered about twice what I paid for it. I'll bet there have been a couple thousand pictures taken of it. I've had people walk out in front of me in the street to make me stop so they could get a pic. I've also almost been hit driving down the autobahn by people trying to get a pictures of it. That applies not only in Germany. You should have seen the reaction on the French Riviera. Overall, they love it. I even have kids come over and stand in my driveway and watch while I wash and polish it.

I will be honest and upfront, I didnt read the whole post, but I think your alittle off on you thoughts. I'm not going to use my car for a example, because I have a option that most didnt. Mine is a Y87 car which is the same as a B4C. The 93's had the same deal, and the rub is what makes them special is parts from the 92 and 91 cars..the only cars that have better brakes are the ls1 cars (to haul them down from their better speed  ) (( calm down, you know me)) ). The SS offers Zero in terms of handling, speed, braking over a normal run of the mill Z28.
Just thought I would throw that out there,....and yeah I know the hate mail is coming

... you should see the people's reaction once you roll down the streets with a fbody (any muscle car) older than 20/30 years, when I start up the Dodge and move it a little down the road it is the attraction of the town - even without license plates. A first or second generation in decent shape will beat anything - but people think you are even MORE crazy paying all that money starting at the gas station with prices around $5 per gallon, tax by cubic, etc.
Which is true, if I drove one as daily driver I would be broke with the distances I drive
and most people here just don't have the garage space to keep more than one car or two if the wife is working, I am lucky living on a farm and no hurry to fix/wait for replacement parts.

I'm just saying that both stock setups are junk. Bring a 1LE out, and things will be differant, but the SS and the Z28 (pontiac equivelants) all plow like a dump trucks.

As the owner of an SS, I can show you that there are mods done to the suspension. Granted, they are not that much better than stock, but it does make a difference, especially with the large BFGs that came with it. SS that doesn't have more speed? I KNOW that you can't be talking about the LT1s, the stock Z28 had a top speed of 156 mph, the SS had over 160 (this could be due to the extra 30 hp). Brakes, well they still suck.
I know about the 1LE, but they wouldn't ship it over here to me.  BTW, I kept the purchase order and the 1LE option was less than $200.  Adjustable shocks were included in that price. '96 was the first year where A.C. was standard and not deleted. Yes, the 1LE would have made much more sense $ wise, but it wasn't available overseas so I went with the next fastest Camaro, which was the SS.

Sorry to burst your bubble SS but........ As Rob stated there is nothing different between the 2. You are buying cosmetics and some plastic dash plating...that's it. It doesn't handle any different the a run of the mill stk Z even w/ your bilstein upgrade. That's how they get buyers to shell out the extra K's so you THINK you are special. Beefier sway bar for the front and rear by 2mm is nothing to brag about in regards to performance (not you) just speaking in general.
Contrary to popular belief a stk SS is actually slower than a stk Z. I know the answer to that riddle. A fbody is a fbody period. Nothing special until you start modding the bejesus out of it and then that's what seperates the 2 then. That goes for LS1 or LT1.

Now I know that it was too much money, that $4k could have gotten better parts, but read all of the reports, the SS was faster and handled better. Now I am talking about back in '96. Don't know about the LS1s though. BTW, I think that the computer was modded some. My rev-limit is 6,100 (stock) and I can hold it in any gear and it will hit the limiter without it shifting on its own. Yes, it's an auto. If the wife was to pay for it, I mean let me get it  , it had to be an A4. It's ok though. Car is very consistant at the track.

Yeah we have a way of hijackin a thread quick around here.  Don't feel bad hindsight is 20/20 and I've been down that slippery slope myself w/ parts. Live and learn. Yeah those magazines sure get the juices stirred esp Motor trend, Car and Driver etc. Look at a real mag like HTP now called GMHTP or Pontiac Performace and the results there are startling. These guys DRIVE these cars as intended.
I've got 5 yrs worth of HTP GMHTP and consistently the SS is slower by 7 tenths and 1mph on average. That's LT1 and LS1's.

I'm sure I speak for alot of people when I say that GM was onto something with the SS concept though, if not there wouldnt be a bah zillion clones running around. Who doesnt like the look of the hood, wing and wheels? To say thats its a actual "SS" has to be worth the promised 30hp, I just bought 2 years to early, or I also would have had one.
