I'm trying to buy an '87 GN over here that doesn't have a title. Car's been in country for a long time, and as we know, a title isn't needed to register a car through vehicle registration. Nothing show's up in carfax.com, it has been registered for quite sometime, and none of the previous owners can find a title. I'm trying to track down if the car was ever stolen, but my main problem is can I ship it back to the states and get it titled/registered there. Someone emailed me and said they had the same problem 10 years back, and all he did was sell it to his GF and then she took it to the TUV and got a German title. Then she sold it back to him and when he got to the states, changing it to an American title was easy. I'm going nuts here! Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks,
Mav

No Title I would just walk away from it . As for the GF thing . You can't sell it to a National with out a clear title . USAREUR Vehicle registry might keep a continuous file of people who owned the vehicle. If their is no Clear title it must mean there is a lien holder some where.

There wouldn't be a lien holder on a car 17 years old. As far as the headache, I'm trying to find out if it's worth it. The deal is good, and there is still room to work around this "title" thing. So if there is a way, I will find it. Just checking if someone knows an easier way.
Thanks!

Oh you better believe there can be a lien on a 17 yr old car. It's not uncommon the hard part is trying to find out who has the lien. I wouldn't touch it and avoid it like an STD.

Well.....it appears, that I might get off easy on this. The current owner has contacted the Manhiem central registration office( I guess this is the first place it was registered), and they say that they may have a copy of the title. The car came over here in Jan 95 and was thought to have a lein at the time, but really didn't. The title was then mailed to them and/or the owner. As I said, you don't need a title to register your car over here, so the owner probably didn't care about the title at the time. I informed the current owner that the title needs to be in his name before I will buy it. I'll let him deal with that problem.
Jack, this is the "WAY" overpriced GN that was in the KA a few weeks ago. I tried to buy it back in April for $1K. It wasn't running, and had mucho other problems. Now it is running, and running well. Turbo and motor are good at 77k miles. The tranny needs a new second gear clutch, but I will rebuild that. Need to learn sometime. It needs new rear quarters and a drivers side door skin, but that can wait. I need a project to do over here. I still have 10 months left. I have been on ebay and all the Turbo Buick sites, and have compaired the prices, and I will be getting a good deal on this. Damn near half of what they are going for in the states. It's more about the fun for me. If only the title comes squeaky clean to me.
Thanks for the help,
Mav

Yeah, I know which one you're talking about. That guy is always at the craft shop working on it.

How much does he want for it now, $4500? It's definitely not worth that, but I guess if you're looking for a good project, that would be one, albeit a rather expensive one to start off with. I'd pay that for a beat up 1st gen, but not a later model....
