At Bitburg the LSD locked up solid and the car would not turn anymore. I let a lot of air out of the rear tires (so they can flex and take up the rotational difference) and managed to get the car on the autobahn.
Initially I was quite nervous that the whole rear might lock up and induce a "handbrake" type of spin into the barriers (or an oncoming truck), but fortunately the LSD is contained in a type of cylinder which kept the loose bits from falling between the gearbox teeth. Going straight was not a problem, just the turns.
About halfway through the 330km trip home there was another terrible crunch and the car started to behave very evil. Inside the LSD the drive to the right rear wheel sheared off and I only had drive to the left rear wheel. Everytime I touched the throttle the car turned right and when I lifted it snapped left.
I have a workshop date for Wednesday, then we will see the extend of the damage. I hope it is just an easy swap-out of the LSD and that I will soon be on the road again. Right now I have to make do with the wife's C4S, since the RS is currently not insured and the 914/6 has a gaping hole where the engine normally sits.
I doubt that the car will be done for Thursday's Hockenheim date though.

Stef,
Glad to hear that you made it home safely. Hopefully you are right and it will be an easy swap for them to get it fixed. Would rather them take their time than to rush it just for track trime.

Status report: The P-car is back from several days in the shop. Since the car is only a few months old, I got a brand-new gearbox/diff and ZF (the manufacturer) is going to eat the cost.
