Well, I've been searching around quite a bit lately and found a ton of useful info, but I think I ran into a slight problem....
Ok. My buddy said I should flush my engine after I got it in top running condition (which is was in). I drained out all my oil and kept the little screw guy out of the bottom of the big metal tank and then poured in a couple gallons of boiling water to clean everything out, which flowed the water out. I put the screw back in, and I let it sit for a couple minutes, put in slick 50 and then started it for the 2 minutes that my buddy said to do and kept it at 5k rpms. My motor then starting making this really loud knocking noise, which followed with a loud bang, and the engine shut off.
I'm afraid to try and restart it. What do you think it could be?

did it start making those noises after you revved or while you were revving it? maybe it just needs some time to burn all the water out but i dont know, was the loud bang from your engine or ur exhaust backfiring, a lil more info please

Thats just the Slick 50 kicking in!
Just crank it over, ignore any noise you might hear.

Well, it made the noise after I held it at 5k rpms for a few minutes. I should also add there was a whole bunch of smoke too and a burning smell, which is why I'm afraid to try to start it. Do you think my engine could blow up? There was really a lot of smoke.
I just went outside a minute ago and noticed big chunks of metal underneath my car. I'm thinking that's a bad sign.

What does the metal look like? Maybe some duct tape or JB Weld could help you out. In all seriousness though, you blew your motor up. Good going Capt. Stupid.

bump for you, i hope someone can help you out here, you should try and take pics of the metal pieces you saw under the car and post them up, it might help with the diagnosis....good luck

Oh well. I probably needed a new engine anyway.
I cant seem to find any good how tos for adding an "LSD" into my transmission. I saw in the forced induction form that people recommended an "LSD" if you turbo your car. I think I need one of these. Do I need any special tools, or will my 74 piece socket set from Craftsman be ok?
I'm feeling pretty confident that I can tackle this job, not taking into account the minor setback I had with the engine. After all, I managed to replace the distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, ignition coil, and one of my belts on my own after spending some time on this site. The car ran like brand new after doing all that.

well put it like this, u need all special tools for opening up your tranny, there is a walkthru somewhere on these forums, i think in the manuel tranny forums, u need to open it up, install and reinstall everything, kinda a lot of work, but since ur gonna rebuild your motor then ok

wow, i hope this is just a big joke, if so it's pretty damn funny . I am by no means a mechanic and i've screwed stuff up doing it myself, nothing major(knock on wood), but for the love of god, put down the tools and step away from the car! Take some time to learn what is going on first and then learn how to do things the right way. wow

Maybe you should take some LSD and let a professional "tackle" that job

I saw while searching in the transmission forum someone sort of tear down a transmission, but they didn't have the part where they put it back together and they didn't put in an "LSD".
Maybe I should have someone who knows what they are doing do the transmission work when the motor gets replaced.

Come on down and we can discuss your options. But I think you should learn more about your car before you even think about going turbo. Pouring water into where oil goes is something you should have realized wouldnt work. Stop listening to your friends also.

Ok I just called up my friend to yell at him, and I got mixed up on what he said. He was talking about hot tanking a block or something that cleans off all the crud on and in your engine. I thought he meant pour the boiling water INTO the engine. My bad.

My buddy is pretty well-respected on ClubSI and knows his stuff. He said I should just put in straight slick 50 and then drain that, and then put in regular oil afterwards. Something about breaking in the engine properly.

Ok, I just got off the phone with scirocco20v, and since he's only in the next state over and not too far away, he's going to do my engine and transmission work. Very reasonably priced and really seems to know what he is talking about, not that I'm much of a judge on that.
I wrote down a list of what he is going to do -
new block
new head
forged pistons
forged crankshaft
forged rods
new "hardware"
the "LSD"
transmission rebuild
new clutch
new motor mounts (something about the OEM ones suck for a lot of power)
turbo setup
I think I probably forgot some stuff as I was trying to talk and write at the same time. Since I need my car it won't be all at once but the engine will obviously be done ASAP and then we'll focus on the other stuff.
I am pretty excited about this. I'm glad I'm getting a better Christmas bonus from work than I thought I was getting and it's all going into the car.

I just got done talking with 8vgumby.
We worked out a pretty slick turbo setup that should make some great power...I'm only like an hour or so out, so we're going to try and bang it out once the engine is running.
Stay tuned.

This might happen sooner than I thought since scirocco20v had an engnie he was building up that will fit in my car. Its not a new engine but a rebuilt one, but I think it will work ok. I guess with enough perswaysion ($$$) I convinced him to sell it as I didn't want to wait a few weeks to get all the parts and put it together. I am heading over his way in a little bit to pick it up from him as my brother is here for the holiday with his F250. Since I dont want to have the car towed I'm gonna put the engine in myself. Scirocco didnt recommend that at all, but after learning the hard way to so speak, I dont think I'll be doing anything really dumb after that. I bought a Chilton manual yesterday from Napa and some green coolant and oil and will rent one of those engine lift things - picking that up locally after the engine. I'll keep you guys posted as hopefully I will have the engine out some time this afternoon.
Thanks again Scirocco

Re: (8vGumby) » « » 4:04 PM 11-27-2004
Well my bro was nice enough to go pick up the engine and lift for me while I stayed at home and started taking apart the engine, he will earn a 30 pack just yet! Anyways I think after I jacked up the car onto some sturdy cinderblocks (VW doesnt seem to make strong sides though because the part under my doors crushed in ) and got a looksee underneath I noticed that the chunks of metal did some damage to some stuff. The pipe coming out of the back of the engine has a small dent and hole in it, and the rubber thing around the axle is ripped (theres alot of grease inside there!!). I guess I need to get some additional parts, is there an online place to get this stuff?
I started working on the engine removal around 10 am and I think it went pretty smoothly. Since all the oil was already drained out of the block I only had to drain the cooling system. I couldnt figure out how easily get those clamp things off so I just cut the hose off underneath the car since it was a small hose and probably cheap to replace at Napa. I was thinking of replacing all my hoses anyway since they are probably up for a change so its no big deal. The manual said to take the hood off and that was probably a good idea that I had my wife to help me because it wouldve been a bit difficult with one person. I didnt see the little metal thing that was attached to the hood and fender, and ripped that in half, oh well.
Anyways I think the disasembly went good. I had to unplug a bunch of electrical stuff and unbolt the engine from the car. It's just kind of sitting there. Im not quite sure what I am supposed to do with the transmission, do I unbolt that from the engine now or pull it out of the car with the engine? I found I had to go buy more more tools too.
My bro showed up with the engine and lift a little while ago, and it is pretty clean looking. It has a hole in front of it on the left side that looks like something is supposed to attach there though, I need to figure out what that is. The engine lift is heavy let me tell you, it took the three of us to get it off his truck and after my wife dropped it on her toe I thought she was going to kill me. Fortunately it was almost on the ground anyway so it looked like it didn't hurt too bad.
Back to work, hopefully Ill have some good progress reports for tomorrow morning

I just looked at the MKIII forum and they dont appear to like new people very much so I think I will not post in that one for a bit. Actually I'm not really new Ive just never posted or been on at all until recently. At least until my car is done anyways. I did find a helpful site though. German auto parts looks like it will be the place to get the parts I need and I should get parts fast since theyre only in NY and people seem really happy with them.
Back to the car, I havent done much to it since last night. Going to work on it but I need to go to sears in a bit to get some tools. This is turning out to be more expensive than I thought. Oh well at least I'm learning about my car!!

Ok time for a short lunch break and update.
This is going slower than I thought it would go, I think scirocco might've been right on that I shouldnt do this. I worked on it until 10 last night and then from 830 until just now and finally got the motor out. It didnt look like that much work in the Chilton book but theres alot to it and I need to order some new parts too.
Oh before I forget I need to ask about those axle bolts that bolt onto the transmission. I stripped a couple of them trying to use a allen wrench type socket. It looks like it takes this really strange socket that Ive never seen before, and got the allen head socket to fit in pretty good but stripped the heck out of the bolt when I tried loosining it. I gave up after the second bolt stripped too so I think I'm stuck again. Also since that pipe behind the engine has a hole in it, I tried to take that off too but everything is rusted REALLY bad under there. I was debating taking my trusty sawzall to it - Im actually pretty handy around the house but not around cars so it seems - but wasnt sure if that was a good idea.
So out side of the stripped bolts and trying to take off that pipe I think the engine is ready to come out. My buddy is over and after I finish lunch were going to give it another try.

You don't have a 12 point torx head for those axle bolts? How are you going to get the transmission constriculator bolts/springs out?

Re: (surferfletch) » « » 5:13 PM 11-28-2004
No, I had to go back to sears and get more tools to remove the stripped bolts combined with lots of WD40. I let my buddy finish up the job and take the engine out of the car since I wasnt haveing much luck. I now need to get a new axle because of the ripped rubber part, new cooling system hoses, some replacement bolts, and whatever else I need. Well at least the engine is finally out any way. Now I have to wait until I get new parts so we can put the new one in.
I noticed theres a plate bolted to the side of the engine after you unbolt the transmission. Im assuming that since the new engine doesnt have that that I need to put that one on the new engine. How do you remove the bolts since the plate just rotates when you try to loosen them?
