When I was stationed in Japan, drifting was already big. The base has a chartered sports car club and we held autocrosses in the base high school parking lot. A lot of courses designed every month were mostly by guys wanting to do more drifting than autocross, but it was a lot of fun (and legal on base). Some of the club members would travel to Nikko race park north of Tokyo to go to drifting contests or we would take to the hills and watch them on the public roads every weekend. I used to be abel to sling my AE86 (Corolla SR-5) around, but that's small in comparison to the cars they're driving now.
