Not sure if you know and in this case I didn't this yr but the rules have changed. As of 1 Nov 06 all vehicles must be equipped with M+S tires aka "winter tires". In the event you are in a accident whether single car accident or multiple the individuals w/ all season, Z-rated etc. will be fined and held responsible for the accident. No questions asked period end of story. In addition they can flag you down if they feel you don't have the correct tires on and be fined. Now we all know Polizei are not like stateside cops meaning every 5 ft you look you see a cop but you still don't want to chance it. The roads are getting slick a lot sooner than previous yrs.

So be careful and be safe! If you can put the Beast away for the winter do it and the sooner the better. I can't drive my truck because of this so I'm car pooling w/ the wife in the other car and putting the winter wheels on this wkend if not tonight when I get home! The Toy won't be out til Mar/April when winter is allegedly over.

To be exact, the law is that the "tires must be suited to weather conditions", i.e. when it's dry & no snow & no ice there's no requirement for winter tires.

This was done intentionally so that you don't have to have winter tires during winter regardless if it's sunny and dry or if the roads are covered with snow. Or in other words: That someone who only drives in good weather doesn't have to buy an extra set of winter tires.

For us military folk it came down as 1 Nov but I just assumed it applied to all drivers.

The law is just there for all the people that are stupid enough to drive around in the winter on bad roads with summer tires ... endangering themselves and others (or at the very least annoying everybody due to their crawl)

Well we have a lot of people stupid or not who don't know how to drive in winter conditions. I don't wish anyone harm but if they were involved in a accident at least I don't want them being cited for improper tires and taking full blame for the accident EVEN if it had nothing to do w/ the tires, ya know? I'd rather they just be stuck w/ 1 bill vs 2 but 0 would be better on all counts.

I don't understand people anyway ... if you wear down your summer tires or your winter tires doesn't matter, except that usually the winter tires are somewhat cheaper than the summer ones ... so why not change in time???

Not only that a lot of us have a good amount of time and money in out cars and if one of us totaled our car we would only get the money the car is worth or at best maybe a little more. I just isn’t worth it when you can pick up a beater for a few hundred dollars.

GTO did just fine on the BFG KDW's last winter - thankfully that there was only one real snow and I stayed off the autobahn on the way home. I've got the Winters and I've got another set of rims...just want to get them powder coated first...I can wait till next month after that's done.

I've done the last 3 winters on all-seasons in my BMW. It's more about knowing the limits of your tires and driving smooth than just traction.

Now, driving on ice with bald, run-flat, summer tires---that's an experience I don't care to repeat.

I completely agree! You just have to know how to drive. I kept my drag radials on my daily driver all last winter through thick and thin in Oklahoma. Granted we did not have as much snow as what I expect here, but it was constantly multiple layers of ice. I did put KDWS's on the rear wheels here because I thought I had to for inspection. Truthfully, I preferred the drags

I think I can do with the tires I got.
If the Nissan gets stuck, I'll take the GMC to pull it out.
If that don't work, I'll come here and ask you guys for help

I agree with Stef!! They just have any really cool snow tires in the larger rim sizes.
Oh did I tell you if it even thinks about snowing where I'm going the whole city will come to a complete halt

After that totaled car, the broken sternum, the cracked rib in 2003 and realizing that it was pure luck that i didn´t die, i simply don´t want to hear that big-mouthed crap about that you can drive with summer tires in winter and you just have to be a very good driver and bla bla bla...
I probably don´t get a second chance to learn that there are situations where summer tires just don´t stick and you can´t do nothing about that, especially if you´re trying to slow down, and also 4WD won´t help you then.
I don´t know about winters in the states, but here that new law just makes sense IMO.

So i´m going to put winter tires on my ugly winter-VW today and wait till April to drive a real car again
