This is a great article about filling engine oil before road racing your car and why you need to do it. Also the oil pan is as close to a dry sump system you can get. Their is a dry sump that Katech offers for all engines.

Yep good info , This is one of the reasons I believe my original engine has lasted so long.

Wow, cool info ... good to know! Does this also apply to the stock LS1 oil pan?

While on the subject, what are you running in your engines? The Firehawk manual calls for 5W30 ... guess I need to pick up two gallons for the engine upgrade ... ;)

Garry (and Nick) it's known that the 10W30 and 5W30 thin out very quickly. That's why I'm using M1 0W40 since "forever" as this is made from much much better "base oils" and will not have that effect. Additionally the numbers alone tell you it's thicker at high temps that the *W30 oils.

I run 15w50 in the summer (9qts of it for a fill) and and a mix of 15w50 and 5w30 in the winter.
And yes for Fbody pans you should add the extra qt if you pulling some pretty good G forces.

is it 9qts because the LS1 pan for F-Bodies is larger than the LS6 pan on the vette?

I had a long response but my popup at work or whatever ate my logon and when I posted, it lost all of the data, so a quick rundown on the article:

It applies to both LS1 and LS6 for filling 1 extra quart for racing. The oil pan differences between the Ls1 and LS6 allow that the oil stay in the top of the pan and thus in the block longer after racing has ended.

Both LS1 vette and Fbody oilpans allow for limited scavngeing whereas the LS6 has higher ability, other wise the LS1 and LS6 race car drivers need to add 1 quart to race safely.

Ideally, this http://www.lingenfelter.com/store/arels1pan.html which is for both LS1 and LS6 engines woudl be great, but you lose AC.

Katech no longer has the drysump kit on their web page..hmmm.

Garry, that should be correct, I can post that on the Z06vette forum and ask the guy if that would be correct, however, I understand that all of the LS1's and LS6's no matter what car benefit from the extra oil, so if you have a 8 quart pan, than 9 would be correct.

Roy, might know more.

Garry on my the xtra capacity comes from my oil cooler lines and oil cooler plus the big 1 quart Ford FL1 (FramPH8) oil filter. I believe the stock Fbody LS1 Pan is 5.5 qts to get it to the full mark.
