Getting ready to pull the 3rd member for a rebuild she is howling pretty bad. :x I ran it with to much pinion angle on the bahn back from Eisinach last month and either junked a pinion bearing or change the wear pattern on the ring pinion setup. no lrge metal stuff just a buch of noise.

you know what i know, and besides the occasional shooting ourselves in the foot by to much pinion or whatever, the basic rule applies. You get what you pay for. There are several differant flavors of centers. Check out racingjunk.com, they may have a pro series. If your just doing bearings and little piddly stuff, you'll be doing it again.

3 years of hard driving with that much horsepower will kill any gear. It was due a rebuild.

Bruce If the third member was assembled with a crush sleeve on the drive pinion then that is more than likely the culprit . The drive pinion is walking the ring because the crush sleeve didn't hold its shape , due to your high horse power launches. Ford motorsports has an improved sleeve for this , an so does some aftremarket vendors. Eexcessive pinion angle usually chews up ujoints .

@ Roy, That is exactly what happened. I looked at the ring gear personally. Pieces of the crush sleeve fell out into the carrier. The tooth patter is all off on the ring now. The gears are junk. The only thing I could do was to re-adjust his backlash so he could get one more weekend of racing in. He now has a complete rebuild kit with gears. Should be fixed by this weekend.

It does not have a crush sleeve but it chewed a couple shims on the pinion throwing everything out wack.

What do you mean it doesn't have a crush sleeve? it has to either have a crush sleeve or a shim ring.

Done deal New gears/bearings pretty quiet now but I still hear a slightn whine. I will tighten the backlash a tad and I should be good.

Roy/Val I still have a slight whine very minor but just jumpy before I start pounding on these gears and junk them it is very quiete @ 100 MPH. Noise changes slightley on decel to a slight moan.

If it is moaning then it is enjoying the horsepower! Actually we need to check that backlash after you drive it somemore.
