V8
Yep 1st gear would be your optimium choice, Now if your overall final ratio in second gear is greater than 9:00 to 1
than secind gear is doable.
Bit I think just like Bruce , once you get rid of the weak link clutch , what will be the next weak link?
Stay safe

Hey Jesse if you want to see if your clutch is going bad just throw it in fifth or sixth pull the emergency brake and give it gas while letting off the clutch. If your car stays running and doesn't die then your clutch is on it way out you can also tell in a since how worn it is by how high the pedal gets when it stalls.
When my clutch went bad I could leave it in sixth bring the rpms up to 2000 and the car would stay running. But then again I was missing a 1/4 of my clutch. This is what gm mechanics do to troubleshoot.

Now that is something I would have never thought of. Leave it to the clutch killers to have a way to test it before they finish it off. LOL

Quote: Quote: I think I am going to need a new clutch soon. I was trying to do a second gear burnout. Get the RPM up, dump the clutch and floor it. All I get is smoke from the clutch and go no where. It will hold doing it in first, but not second. Also I noticed if I get on it hard, at high RPM, I hear a whining noise that rises and falls with the sound of the RPM. So I think if I plan on doing much with it, I should replace the clutch sometime. Suggestions on a good clutch setup and price? Silly question , but what possess you to dothat in second gear instead of first? if the clutch did'nt slip you would of more than likely got nothing more than a chirp un less ythe back wheels were standing in water.
When you do a burnout with a line lock or just for track purposes you should use 2nd. It will allow you to rev higher and spin more.. I have used 2nd many times with no problems.....

Sorry George I will have to disagree with ya there unless the car final overal 2nd gear ratio greater than what I have stated and yor tires are have just gone through the water box.
Besides why would you butcher a set of street tires that way. it will not make em hook any better.
Once youget to the states and start going to the tracks again, you will see for your self.
All the tracks that I have been to in thestates won't even let you get your treaded tires wet. and the dry burnout box has so much much rubber and VHT impreg nated in the concrete or asphalt that a second gear burnout will be a struggle.

This is true, and why would you want to do a long burnout on street tires anyhow? To heat them up? That just makes no sense to me...most of us are running Z rated (or one of the high speed ratings) that are designed not to heat up!!! The only thing that you need to do with street tires is to spin them a few times to clean them off.

You sir are correct.
give your street tires 4 or 5 spins to clean off the thousands of rocks that will be sticking to them.
as far as the 2nd gear burnout, I was told that you had to do this, because you wont get the tires going fast enough in first. I dont have a line-loc, but with DR and 4.10's in both cars, doing a 2nd gear burnout was easy enough. Probably not the greatest for the rear brakes, but you can hold it for as long as you want.

Rob
So your saying your spinning up your DR's without going through the water box in second gear. That must be a hell of a power beast.
with 4.10 gears and 2nd gear that gives yo an overall 2nd gear ratio of about 7.30 to 1 not really to good therebut with the xtra power is doable. But with 4.10 you would have to use 2nd to keep the rpms in the mid range . In 1st gear you would be on the rev limiter to hit 40 mph.
You Really donot have to spin your tires any faster than 40-50 mph to get the results that you looking for in a DR. Any thing more can lead to rapid degradation of the tire.

I'm not dumb enough to doubt your math Roy, but both the Z28 and the 5.0 must be like bumble-bees (not supposed to be able to fly, but do). Cuz both of them will spin the tires until the rubbers gone with a 2nd gear dump.
To tell the whole truth, at the 1/8 I go to, you have no choice but to go thru the water (about a 1/2 foot width of water) but I just drive thru it, and do my thing on the other side, so yeah, I guess there is a small swatch of water on the rear wheels.
BTW, the Z has the tq with the 4.10's and 6 gears, but the 5.0 with 4.10 and 5 gears definatelly has more ratio in 1st, and according to the last dyno, its making a blazing 209.3 rwhp and 258.6 torque, so monster motors they arent.

60,000 miles is a long life for a clutch in the hands of a gearhead I hope mine will last that long.

I have to agree with Rob... I have read numerous places that 2nd gear is the choice.. I am sure with 300+ RWHP there is not to much a set of slicks can hang onto with a 4K+ dump.... I have not tested this theory, but I will for sure update on this in about 4 months..... I was talking with slicks or DR's not street tires........ It was a general statement...

This is a $2500 dollar question with slicks and a good clutch.
