Yep they have been sold , They needed a rebuild on the calipers because the boots were burnt, rotors were blued, and the pads were nil to nothing. The only thing that was good was the park brake. I just don't understand why that stuff doesn't hold up to the bahn.

On my 99 Z the brakes went buggy after a rather sudden stop from 230 kmh on ABahn. After this whenever i went more then round 100 kmh and braked i had the drrrrrrrrrr.... sound and the car started rattling. When my inspections was due i told the local GM guys bout the problem and hoped for the best. 4 days later i had brand new rotors, pads and stuff installed for free! :-)

Explanation: The brake system on the US models and Z28s sold to Germany are far too weak for speeds of more than 100 mph and then whack it, they run in and overheat resulting in a warped rotor. So they put stronger ones up front for free (!) when the customer complains (!!) or comes in with destroyed ones (!!!) - so much for safety.

The guy was talkative so i pushed the matter and what he said was, that in the states due to the speed limit they simply designed the thing too weak to save costs. When they ship em here it´s still the same ones. So i was lucky i came to a stop at all. Mind it, the car had only about 6000 miles of cautious (did not drive to wild) driving on it.

Anyway i took a look at the rotors and compared em with a brand new car in the showroom (A 2001 Z28) and bingo - my new rotors are bigger and also have a slightly different color on the connection to the axle.

Weird story but seems to be true - the car stops mucht better now. You guys can take a look at it in spring.

So long.

Do you have some kind of recall-code or something? I'd like to have it checked with my dealer, too ... especially as I'll try to have Tony remove the speed limiter on mine ... :)

No, i just have the repair bill where they put it under "Kulanz".

The information i got was from the mechanic directly. As i said they only do it WHEN the customer complains. Probabaly they don´t want everybody to know - or all people would stand in line for free new brakes. I can only say, try it. According to my source they did this a few time already.

Hey Rampage

Man somebody is pulling your leg or something. The brake rotor size that comes on the LS1 is as big as it gets. You cannot got to a bigger diameter or thicker rotor without first getting a bracket fabricated to move the caliper out farther, and then going with thinner pads to accomodate a thicker rotor. Now their is a variance of diamater in the aftermarket rotos of oa couple mils + or -. But you can't take advantage of it because the stock pads donot cover the rotor properly anyways.
Anything bigger would have to be aftermarket.

Makes sense. Anyway in my opinion the stuff looks different.
I´m not that good in technical english, but i hope i get it right:

The rotor looks definitevily different (from the joint to the place where they fix it). The pads and holders (calipers?) look totally different then before.

I THINK that they put something bigger in. They exchanged it all, it was all new parts. Mind it, i´ve got a 99 model, perhaps the 2001 brakes look like this. You´re the experts here. In my opinion the system is bigger and has more stopping power. I did not take the whole thing apart measure everything. You can decide for sure when you see it.

The more interesting fact is that a GM mechanic openly admitted that the brakes are far to weak for a car this powerfull - and that it happens the brakes fail and they give you a pair of new ones free in waranty time.

Boy, you sure like serious discussions here.
