Hi folks,
last weekend I spotted lots of little cracks on both the front brake disks of my Camaro Z28 (LS1).
There are about 30-40 cracks in radial orientation, between 5 to 10mm long, depth: who knows?
The car has covered 26000km, the pads are good for another 5000km, the discs show hardly any wear, no scratches or grooves.
Have you also faced this problem?
Should I change the discs?
Last month the car was for inspection, but the garage staff did not mention anything.
Cheers!
Gunnar

Thanx Roy,
I will check the inside of the vented front discs.
Unfortunately your links do not work. All of them.
The cracks are still small, situated on the outer third of the discs, but all around.
There is no unusual vibration. The car brakes okay.

Gunnar:
I also have these cracks (car has about 18000 km) and was worried about it but as Roy says, if they are superficial it shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry Roy,
after copying the paths to a word document, the links worked!
The cracks on my brake discs do not look as dramatic as yours did. Mine are equally distributed all around and do not touch the outer edge.
But Ben, who knows whether the cracks are really superficial only??
A question to Ben and Hawk:
Have you tried to get the discs exchanged and let Chevrolet pay??
I will contact my dealer (Kiffe in Münster, funny name in connection with the word "dealer"!!)

I had mine go bumpy at around 16.000 km.
Went to GM, said warranty, that´s it.
No hassle, a new set was in a few days later and these seem to hold (up till now)
I´ll opt for those bears, too. (Hawk, i´m short on dough at the moment, keep em pls.)

I had three free sets and have the same problem after someone pulls out in front of me and I do a oh sh!+ stop. Then they start the shaking game and I am sick of replacing brakes and rotors. The Stock rotors can not handle the vehicle speed capability.

.. though my new set seems to hold and hold.
Hawk, you know my driving style, especially A-Bahn
The new set is from the 2001 model (at least the local Opel nerd says so) - they look different from the old ones and seem to be better. Still - more stopping power would do the car good.

I've beat the livin' shi* outa my Power Slot rotors and they are holding up really well so far. bout 12k on them so far. They are heat treated or something ... to resist wear and warpage.

I don't know if they really are, it's just that Roy told me before as he told you now.
No, I haven't tried to get them exchanged as I didn't have any problems with the brakes except of the small cracks. I drive on the Nuerburgring now and then, and have not yet realized any problem (however, I make a break after every lap). Have you looked in the German Service/Warranty Manual? On the one hand it says everything is covered except tires, on the other hand that (e.g.) brakes/brake pads/rotors are NOT covered.
Ben

Hi folks,
Chevrolet offered 50% cost reduction for the disc replacement. From Geiger Performance in Munich I learned that with 2001 model year so-called Heavy Duty discs became standard. I know the part numbers so the Opel mechanics can order the right parts.
The Movit brakes must wait!
Cheers!
