Maybe someone here can help me out with something. My brakes are somewhat loud, a humming like noise. Now, my question is, what would most likely be the cause of this noise, the pads or the rotors? I have EBC pads and rotors, which were installed at the same time. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's the pads and/or rotors? Could it be something else? I have never heard of a humming noise from the brakes. Of course, I know far from everything! :P

Yep, I am sure. It's cause and effect. I am not sure what is causing the noise but they are loud. They make kind of a swooshing humming type noise. The rotors are slotted and dimpled so the may be making the noise. I saw on a brake pad ad the other night though that the particular pad was "quiet", so it got me wondering.

Hmm, I guess it could be the combination of the pads/rotors. Have you asked anywhere else, like maybe LS1Tech.com?

A little more detail would be in order to decypher this.
what are you doing at the time ie coasting or braking
temp outside that u notice this, did it do it when itwas warmer or when it was colder (seasonal thing) mine holler in the winter because of the pad composition

Mine are grooved Powerslots with Hawk performance pads and hum slightly but not much - but it's hard to hear over the thrumming of the exhaust.

Never any noise while coasting, only when applying brake. I hear them in the summer and the winter.

You drive your car in the Winter, too? Probably not in the snow, though, right?!

I drive my car every day. We don't get much snow here due to global warming (allegedly). Even when it arrives, it doesn't stay long. We use an Astra when it does snow.

I drove my car all last winter. I will not do that so much this year. If there is ice or a lot of snow, I won't drive it this winter. Traction control is your friends, as is ABS.

The possiblities are not endless but here are the most common
1. glazed pads
2. improper pad compound for conditions
3. foreign contamination on pads
4. pad chatter
5. improper fitting pad backing plates to caliper
6. caliper floating pin stuck
7. missing anti squeal shim

Thanks a lot for the info! So you would not think the slots on the rotors would cause the noise? I may just order some different pads see if that makes a difference.

I've worked on alot of brakes and there is a very good chance that it is the slots in the rotors but also I would double check to make sure everything is fitting correctly but there is like a 99.9% chance(if it is a swooshing sound) that your rotors are warped your only resolve is to have them resurfaced or if they are warped bad enough to have them replaced

A humming noise is normal with slotted rotors. Just when the brakes are applied though. I got the same noise right after I put on slotted rotors. Nothing to worry about. When they mentioned that the pads are of the quiet type, they mean that they won't squeal as much as metallic pads which tend to be loud. If you have a problem with squealing, add a thin plastic shim to the back of the pad. Some pads come with them and others come with a copper "paste" to limit the noise. Hope this helps.
