Does anyone know how thick OEM Camaro LS1 front rotors are?
12'' x 1'' ?
I'm going to order some custom sized rotors by Alcon or APracing and needs to know the exact size of them.
thx

A lot of people complain about the GM rear end... well.. I have to say the breaks GM puts on the F-body is worse than the rear ends, total crap. I warped my rotors within 1 month of being in Germany.

They're definitely not meant for high speed autobahn driving. You have to brake too often, and at too high of speeds. They can't take the constant heat up-cool down.

The stock brakes are indeed Chit! GM knows it! I warped my originals 3 time in the states within a year. I thought it was just me but aparrently my dealer at the time said it was a big problem that had been going on for a few years.

Well, since I have Hawk HPS pads on the rotors it's that much better. But after breaking from 260 km/h on the autobahn a few times I feel the fading. That's the reason I want rotors that can take tempratures up to 650 degrees centigrade. I know the movit is the best but as I have still 16'' rims on my car I can't go with them. I need to change pads every 10 tkm, changed my front oem rotors first time after 50 tkm. So I hope the new rotors will last and perform better. thx

LS1, first thing you need to do is get bigger wheels. If you don't, finding Rotors that will work good at 16" will be a challenge.

I'm sure you're right Roy. I think the HPS really makes a good job.
But getting the rotors cooler is possible twice on my opinion:
getting the rotors of better material that will keep less heat in or/and having the rotors drilled. I know the pains of drilled rotors. For this reason I'm trying to get some rotors by alcon.co.uk and by apracing.com that I want only slotted. What's the max. size of rotors I can run under my oem 16'' rims on your opinion Roy?

You all seem to spend a lot on engine mods, but for decent brakes you look like penny pinchers!
Buy some (at least) 18inch wheels and put some big rotors on it!
My 19in wheels+Toyo tires cost less than 2000EUR ( http://www.alutec.de).
And GIs do not have to worry about TUEV, right?
Last Sunday night I had a chase down the A2 from Hannover to Dortmund across the hilly Weserbergland. I was so happy I had the Movit brakes. Its like dropping an anchor
The OE rotors cracked after 10000km and the replacement pads lasted only for 5000km.
Only with good brakes you can rule German roads.

LS1 you basically maxed with that 16 inch rotor.
rule of thumb is add two inches to the wheel size for the size of brake that you want to run.
Gunnar amen on the Movits. Best money I ever spent.

I don't have the money for the Movit brakes as I'm spending all my money on gas being on the track quite often.

Sometime back I was looking around in the internet for part vendors, only to find that some 6-pot Wilwood brakes in US cost half as much as my 4-pot Movits. But now I couldn't find it anymore....
For those who do not need to worry about TUEV, there certainly will be some cheaper alternatives. Today I found some BAER Claw 13,5inch 4-pots for 2700USD, approx. 2250 EUR.
I needed TUEV single approval anyway (as far as I remember some 150EUR). So if you ask some BMW or Audi tuner to fit a Brembo (=Movit) brake to your Fbody and get a single TUEV approval, there should be no problem.
Movit itself offered some solution for 16inch wheels as well, when I asked for a quote three years ago.
Now they offer rotors 304mmx32mm (approx 12in dia), which should fit to 16in wheels. Just ask them!

Wilwood 6 pistons are like $1200. I don't think they're quite the same quality though. I will probably get them, as that is a great alternative.

Gunar how much did you actually pay for your brakes? Front and rear? Where are they located? I may just go ahead and do it this winter.

@ Ben
What's your brake set up on the oem 16'' rims, any problems with them on the track?
@SRZ
I've got a quote for the movit's front kit (322/32mm 4 Caliper system).
The cost is about 2800 EUR plus 16% VAT.
If you are going to buy them just have a look at this link it probably will save you some cash:

I have "Brembo Replacement Rotors", cost $85, look like the stock rotors but are superior to them. With my track driving they last about a year.
Pads were Hawk HPS which were quite good, currently I'm running EBC Greenstuff (absolutely NOT satisfying). When those EBCs are toast I'll try Hawk HP+ as they're more resistant to heat.
I have the *rear* stock rotors and pads and absolutely no problem with them. Still look like new (got new ones in September 2002).
This setup works very well for me on normal roads or on the Nuerburgring. It has its limitations on Hockenheimring (very nasty corner there, where you've got to brake from well over 200 km/h down to 40 km/h -- I always limit myself there to a max of 180 km/h).
