I bought me a hooptie today. 89 Jeep Cherokee, 101,000 miles, leather interior, power everything. 4 wheel drive. Seems to be in good shape except for the paint job and possibly a short. Battery runs down in about 48 hours. Only gave $500 for it so I don't think I'll get hurt too bad. If anybody has suggestions on how to track down the short, I'd appreciate it. I know some people know how to find them. I don't know crap about electronics. May have to learn how to do bodywork and painting next summer.

Congrats
Pulling the fuses one at a time (with the engine not running) and measuring the current in the fuse socket is one possibility to find out what consumes power and how much... (radio and pcm is ok )
Just my 2 cents.

That is a good way. You need to pull the fuses and find out where the short is at. Also you can pull the negitive side of the battery and hook a test light between the the post and the terminal end. If the light lights up then you have a short. If you need help, let me know and I will take a trip over to you and help you figure it out.

might be thermostat but I had several older cars with that problem and this is typical for the cooling-cycle cut off somewhere, i.e. new head gaskets either not fit in perfectly or too much grease used which pressed in the wholes somewhere, or if there was a treaded radiator leak...
leave the heater wide open when hot outside and don't forget to have the extra gallon of water for the traffic jam and you good to go for many more years

I would agree with HotRods suggestion - before I check every single fuse.
Also could be simply the battery itself getting older?
On the paint job - I haven't seen a Cherokee with a good one yet,
last thing to worry about.
But if you want it painted, I am sure Kamilla wants to help J/K

Thanks for the suggestions. Linda may have found my "short" for me. The glove compartment latch was loose so the light was staying on. I adjusted and tightened the latch and the light is staying off now. I hope I have my problem fixed. I have tried everything out except the cruise control and everything works, even the power external mirrors and both of the power seats. I'm a little surprised. Now if it turns out to be reliable, I'll be happy.
Rod, if the latch didn't fix my problem, I may take you up on your offer to help me fix it. I can come up there. I'll let you know if the batters is still discharging. It is a almost new battery.

@ Jerry--THe offer is still there. We can do it one of two ways, you can bring it to me or we can come up there to your place. I think coming over to your place would be better since the wife needs a shopping fix.
@ Mike--I can help you out with that. When do you want to do the exhaust. I have a friend that will let me use his garage and welder if we need it. Also we can use the drive over pit. I just don't want to use the hobby shop because you waiste 2 hours explaining and arguing with people that think that they know it all for an hours worth of work.

A question from the "uninformed": why is it called a "hooptie"?
