I've wondered why the stock airbox is built as it is built... with both the BAFFLES and the RESONATORS.

I guess the reason is noise, right? But there can't be such a great difference to aftermarket lids without the baffles and resonators (I guess there's a much greater difference in noise between stock and aftermarket exhausts)? Or am I wrong? And are there other reasons besides noise for the construction of the stock airbox?

Ben

Yeah, I meant the "rips" (I think baffles is the wrong word?). That makes sense. Still, the resonators are for reduced noise and the difference can't be so great...?

If you look at theconstruction of the box , you will see that the majority of the problems are with the exit of the air from box. It is not very smooth.

It made a 10hp difference on my car when I switched from the stock air lid to the SLP one. I verified it at the track.

I did a couple free mods on my air lid and ram air on my 2000 TA.
-- free mod #1: On the lid there are several grooves: use a dremel to cut out and smooth down the grooves until they are flush. also dont cut past the grooves that are level with the opening of the air tube.

--free mod #2: remove the air box from the car. you will see both the radiator and the cooler for the air conditioner. there will be a small opening in the plastic cover. cut out the cover flush with the sides of the opening of the air box. then cut out the air box to the same size of the now opened portion of the air flow port that was removed. these two free mods combined will allow around 15-25 hp. It wil increase air flow tremendously. where do you live/ if you are close i can stop by and show you mine so that you will get the complete picture of what I am talking about.

Thanks for the info, I guess you're talking about the Free Ram Air mod, saw it on installuniversity.com :)

it should still work if you have the cold air intake like the ss and ram air models. have you tried them? I done it. I can see a difference in the gas gage now. I can say it sucks. The sound is better due to more air flow so the engine can breathe and I can tell the vehicle runs better as well.
