I am getting ready to bust the piggy bank. I would hate to have a broken car in the summer. A 4-6 week wait say it is not so. that equals 2 months of summer who did you order through Thanks.

As long as you don't do any really hard launches you should be OK. I know lots of people running heads / cam with stock rear end. Alot of my problems had to do with my gears and running slicks.
I ordered through T Byrne...coming from the factory I suppose.

Ha Pees run them down like a cat chasing a mouse and pass them on the far end then there is no doubt who is faster after that race. LOL

By launching hard I'm referring to the difference between slicks and radials or even DRs.
The additional force on the drivetrain caused by the slicks coupled with the fact that I have 4.10 gears (which are weaker than lower ratio gears) caused my rear to go kaplooie!!!
If I was running DRs and stock gears I wouldn't have exerted so much force on the drivetrain and my car may still be running today. It wouldn't have been quite as much fun though!!!

I'm sure, that must be a real rush!! I get pushed back in my seat enough, now, I can only imagine with gears and slicks!! :O

I know that is not the preffered method however if you beat them the way I discribed you are alot quicker and have more power. I personally like close races and would rather win.

So tell me, is there a way to make the rear stronger without a full 12 bolt (or 9") swap? I would like one but $2000 is a little steep right now.

Stay with stock gears which are stronger and get a rear girdle....

The girdle is a excellant piece of insurance, and it looks nice as a bonus. Just make sure you rtv the preload nuts also (kinda a experiance thing )
yes a higher gear set will be stonger than a 4.10, because of more metal, but thats like saying "Suzy is stronger than Cindy." A 7.5/8" rear is a poor excuse for these cars.
Peace
Rob

Quote: Excuse my inexperience, but what's rtv? Is that like locktite? Thanks!!
Gasket in a tube. Silicone would probably be a better description, or maybe Perma-tex.
Loctite (blue, red, rainbow) is for bolts so they dont back out.

Quote: So what's a preload nut?
buy a rear-end girdle, and ask that again.
they are what, (besides the cover being stronger) help the rear end survive.
The 2 nuts that lock the studs (depending on brand) that push against the bearing caps helping to keep everything aligned. Usually torqued to 5ftlbs
